Low-loss, high-density structured cabling solution – Pulse Data Centre x Codecom

Custom cross-connect infrastructure engineered for reliability, low latency and long-term scalability at Australia’s first regional Tier III facility.
Pulse Data Center Cae Study

Pulse Data Centres (Pulse DC) partnered with Codecom to design and implement a premium, future-ready structured cabling solution for their Tier III facility in Toowoomba. From day one, the objective was clear: deliver the highest-grade, lowest-loss fibre infrastructure, engineered for longevity, rapid deployment and consistent operational performance.

Codecom brought deep experience from working with leading co-location providers and tailored the CCX 2.0 system, CMD panels and ODF frames to match Pulse DC’s unique operational, spatial and technical requirements.

Challenges

Pulse DC needed a structured cabling system that could:

  • Minimise optical loss across long regional links
  • Support Tier III uptime requirements with minimal operational risk
  • Deliver flexible, cost-efficient cross-connect options for customers
  • Fit within strict spatial constraints, including 300 mm rack depths
  • Enable rapid deployment with predictable delivery timelines
  • Scale cleanly as customer demand increased
  • Maintain ease of operation with no moving parts and front-only access

Cross-connect reliability, high availability, and long-term maintainability were critical success factors for the Pulse team.

“Cross connects are a real pain point for customers at some data centres. At Pulse DC we wanted to provide a flexible and cost-effective solution for cross connects to our customers. This meant that the system had be superior in design, intuitive and able to be quickly installed on demand. Importantly it must be consistently reliable and not compromise on attenuation or quality. For our customers, high quality, long term reliability and low loss are not negotiable. The solution delivers on the high standards required by our customers and has minimised cost for Pulse DC with a flexible design that allow for on demand deployment. 100% SLA is now expected by our data centre clients, our fibre infrastructure is no different.” John Henderson, General Manager, Pulse DC

Solutions

Codecom engineered a complete structured cabling system purpose-built for Pulse DC’s Tier III operational model:

CCX 2.0 Cross-Connect System

  • Front-access, no-moving-parts design to minimise operational risk
  • Fits 300 mm deep racks, enabling back-to-back or wall-mounted installation
  • Clear fibre segregation for customer, carrier and internal routes
  • Flexible MPO/splice cassette options to support varied customer needs

CMD In-Rack Fibre Panels

  • High-density 1RU design (up to 96F)
  • Easy access and simplified patching
  • Developed specifically for fast deployment and operational clarity

ODF Frames & Custom Engineering

Working with Pulse DC’s facilities team, Codecom redesigned the ODF architecture to improve fibre segregation, deliver greater expansion capability and support a high-capacity installation within a reduced footprint.

Component Quality & Low-Loss Performance

Pulse DC specified premium-grade LC and elite low-loss MPO cassettes to achieve minimal attenuation across long-distance links. Using Codecom’s infrastructure, Pulse DC achieved sub-2ms point-to-point latency from Toowoomba to Brisbane Central.

“Pulse DC uses Codecom 45RU 1200mmx 300mm Main Distribution Frames as the standard distribution frame throughout the data centre. To achieve a high capacity installation in a smaller footprint, Pulse DC worked with Codecom’s design engineers to improve their design to allow for improved fibre segregation and greater expansion capabilities. Codecom’s professionalism and excellent service demonstrated to Pulse DC their ongoing commitment to work with our data centre team to continuously improve and evolve their excellent products.” Kevyn Dick, Facilities Services Manager, Pulse DC
